On Sunday June 6, 2010 at 0137 hours station 51 was dispatched for a vehicle accident with reported entrapment on the hillside near the Vandergrift Bridge. A vehicle traveling out of a nearby gas station lost control and struck a parked vehicle before careening over a 60' hillside. The vehicle struck a tree and then flipped down onto the railroad tracks. Vandergrift PD arrived on-scene and witnessed the driver self extricate. R51 responded with 8 and set-up lighting over the scene. E51 responded with 4 and Squad 51 with 2 and set-up traffic control on the bridge. EMS requested a medical helicopter for the patient and E51 was diverted to the YMCA along with Station 50. PD also requested crews assess a damaged gas line on the hillside. Due tot he rough and steep terrain a static belay line was set-up and a crew was sent over the hill with the 4-gas meter. It was determined that the line was abandoned and no hazards were present. After the vehicle was removed by the towing company, all fire department units were cleared by PD.
